Stories from an easily distracted, dyslexic creative … Get me out of here … I’m a fraud! February 1, 2016
So, I recently had this amazing conversation with a genuinely pretty awesome human-being. I am definitely their biggest fan, and look at them for inspiration, and think to myself … “wow, how the hell do I be like them?!” Like, I’m not bull-shitting … this person is the bees knees, “the shit” – as they say … sorry – I was in New York when I wrote this … trying to sound cool and hip. (Is it working?)
Anyway, they are so … well … perrrr……….fect!!
You are thinking that is complete and utter bullshit, right? We know that does not exist … it’s a complete figment of my imagination.
Well, let’s go back to what I am asked all the time …
“I’m looking for balance and perfection in my life.”
I’ve spoken about this before in one of my old papers.
What do either of these things even remotely look like?
Do you know?? You do???
Great – let us all know, because we have no idea!
Anyway, back to my friend. They said to me, “Guess what, I’m imperfect and seeking more contentment.”
SAY WHAT? Wait … what the hell did you just say?
“Yes, we are all like this” my friend says … “what did you expect? I’m not a robot … I’m human and that’s what we do.”
So we start talking about this, and we go deep .. like ‘journey to the centre of the earth’ deep.
See, we all have this issue … we wake up, we say some shit, we do some shit, we be nice to people, we are kind, we empower … we do all this stuff. It’s fulfilling, right?
So, then one day, for no reason – the sun’s too bright, it’s too cold, your morning paper wasn’t delivered, you stubbed your toe or you got a parking ticket. You are in a … funk.
What the hell is a ‘funk’?? Like perfection and balance … I have no idea.
See, a day – or a week – of funk is not a bad thing … if you embrace it.
How the hell do we do that?
Its neurons .. or protons … or some kind of ‘ons’. It’s you telling you to take a break, have a Kit-Kat and chill. Don’t make all the most important decisions right now in your funk.
Be present and slow your brain down to ‘now’.
Every single person … entrepreneur, inspiring person, genius, not so genius, artist, tech guru, teacher and preacher … has this moment.
They think … “Holy crap, I’m a fraud … what am I saying/teaching/doing? People are relying on me to see this through. I started this journey – and they are all watching!”
If only we could press a button that would snap us back into shape. But there is no such button. So, we do all kinds of crazy stuff when this self-doubt kicks in. It can trigger endorphins that could lead to depression. We self-medicate, cry, hide … anything that makes us actually feel worse right? Why? It’s like getting a graze on our knee and putting some fresh salt and lemon on there instead of a bandage.
So – here is my only angle in all this.
Good energy matters – yes, for sure – but it can’t always come from you.
That’s why I have said before … surround yourself by great energy.
Everything is energy.
Surround yourself in people with this energy … because just when you need it … they will provide.
We all have self-doubt … let’s face it … we are real people. Not the fictitious people in the those constant bombardments of life quotes on social media … how annoying are THEY!
Life simply does not work that way.
Life works like this.
Start everyday like it’s a new day … and yesterday was your only benchmark. It’s like an amazing performance. Theatre-goers are here … now … and have no idea that you were awesome yesterday – they only know what they have heard and seen TODAY!
When you get into your FUNK … find those ‘good energy friends’ and let them help you out.
So in a nutshell … If you have a good moral compass, people will know. People that don’t get it – don’t matter. What does matter is that you get back on your horse and keep pushing forward for that next great performance.
You are not a fraud, it’s you questioning yourself and whether you measure up … and that’s actually really normal and healthy.
(Footnote … unless you are a narcissist then …well … you’re kinda fucked).
