Stories from an Easily Distracted, Dyslexic Creative … Is your brain making you fat? September 9, 2015
So …. WTF???
What stresses do you have in your life? Is your Credit Card overdue? You’ve been rejected … you might lose your job … your boss is a dick?
When your brain senses a threat, your body kicks in with adrenaline. You see it in the movies all the time … the hero is in danger and all of a sudden gains the strength of a gorilla and saves the day. Hurrah!
Adrenalin actually makes you feel less hungry … and more likely not to stuff your face.
Ahh, but once it wears off … look out!!! You start to get super edgy, nervous and hungry. We have all been there … and it’s worse if you are stuck in a hotel room with nothing but a mini bar and a fridge full of crapola!
So, let me introduce you to “Cortisol”. Cortisol is a steroid hormone which regulates a wide range of processes throughout the body including metabolism and the immune response. It also has a very important role in helping the body respond to stress.
To put it simpler … it’s saying to you … “Hey dude! We need food – and we need food NOW! Like … RIGHT NOW!” (please note: this may be a slight dramatisation.)
Cortisol is very good friends with “Comfort Food”. They both gang together and sneak up on you … and a lot of the time, they work together with “Childhood Memories”.
It’s like when you are sick with a cold … and everyone knows when males get sick, they are about to die! It’s all very dramatic and I know, I turn into a big, sooky baby. I crave my Mum’s soup, or white bread cheese sandwiches or whatever – but she is never there when I need her (i.e. at the drop of a hat). That’s another story, but I’ll get to that another time.
So we crave comfort like a child with a blanket or stuffed toy.
So when you feel these cravings … and you think about it like this, you will begin to understand stress, and how it can affect our eating habits.
We think we always know when we are stressed, but do we??
Are you sneaking in a midnight snack and hiding the evidence so you don’t see it in the morning?
Are you getting enough sleep?
Do you meditate? (www.dandapani.org)
Do you play sport or exercise?
Do you try to avoid sugar? This is a really difficult one in today’s world … but education is the key … so read this to find out more.
What you send down to your gut really matters … having a healthy digestive system will in turn, provide you with a healthy brain … here, it’s explained better in this info graphic …
So, it’s simple. Mind over Matter. If you don’t mind … it doesn’t matter!
Let’s start working on getting your lifestyle right for YOU and for YOUR BODY. Stop focusing on what you could have, and start focusing on NOW … like RIGHT NOW!
SO, get off your arse and let’s do this!
