Stories from an Easily Distracted, Dyslexic Creative … Want to change your life forever? The art of being present. September 16, 2015
Let me share with you, some old, wise advice from my folks.
Eat as a family. Everyone at the dinner table. Don’t be late.
Growing up in my family was great. We had lots of love and plenty of food. But there was one household rule that you didn’t break … and that was don’t ever … EVER be late for dinner.
Times have changed and things a different.
But why is something as simple as sitting down to a meal as a family, not practiced anymore?
Here’s why … what does the average family in 2015 look like??
1 parent / 2 kids?
2 Parents / 10 kids?
No parents / kids?
2 Men / 2 kids?
2 Woman / 2 Kids?
Exactly … every household is different.
So here is a question for you …
When was the last time you sat … and actually was present … really present.
Read this paper, and then come back in a week, and answer this again. I’d love to know what you noticed.
So let’s back it up a bit.
Being “present” is an art that requires practice.
But you think you are present already?
You are present at a function? With your kids? With your partner? With your parents?
When was the last time you brushed your teeth, or got dressed for work … any “everyday” routine, and stopped and was present … just simply being in that moment? Did you stop yourself from veering out of thought and onto the worlds issues, and your day and what it looks like?
Manifest the ‘being present’ and be in the moment.
Being present will change your life … and here is why …
It is you … being whole and in the moment.
It will calm you. Use meditation
It will purify your thoughts.
You will focus on you.
Your thread of life will be clearer – kindness, love, wisdom, integrity.
Negative energy will fall away (read about energy vampires here …)
Fall in love with yourself.
You will have ones full integrity of ones being, Yeah … you.
You will realize you may have not been conscious and will be in that moment.
This is an ancient Buddhist practice that embraces the Energy of being present and aware combined. More simply – bringing together both body and mind. This will bring Harmony to you and the energy you send out. Gentle kindness will be apparent and you will become aware.
The Art of Being Present.
So, let’s go back to where I started.
It’s called an Art, because you need the talent and practice to master it. It’s harder than it sounds – especially if you are like me … creative, energetic and easily distracted. (Oh look … over there … something shiny!)
Don’t say you are being ‘present’ while you are multi-taking on emails, and talking to your friend on the phone. You can’t do both … you just can’t. So stop it!!!
Arianna Huffington from The Huffington Post discusses this in her book “Thrive”. She gets to a point in her life where she realises the hasn’t been present at all when she was with her children … and the guilt that followed from this.
So whatever your family or non-family, or even if you are alone often, you need to do this.
I am constantly travelling and have mastered being present … but only after I mastered being alone.
So you wanted to know what was going to change?
Well the answer is kinda simple … friggen EVERYTHING!
